This part of the North Sea coast was not quiet Gloucester harbor: it was noted for its storms and shipwrecks, and its lifesaving stations at North and South Shields. The power and danger of the sea became thenceforth dominant themes for Homer. And his style underwent a fundamental change: figures were more solidly and roundly modeled, values and color were deeper and more closely integrated with forms. And there was a new sensibility to changing weather and light, and to the movement of wind and waves and clouds.”
