Bethann Parker
(b. 1984)

In the rural Mountains of North East Appalachia, Bethann Parker runs a homestead that is rooted in traditional living; and in Philadelphia, she tends a studio which, through interdisciplinary research and material experimentation, expands the ways that she depicts her country narrative. Her off-the-grid lifestyle is not as pastoral as Constable depicted, nor as iconic as Currier and Ives would have us believe; but rather clearly explores mixed emotions in visionary paintings.  Using thick impasto oil paint to build up conscious and unconscious memories, she aims to submit to intuition and curiosity while leaving a residue of the domestic and spiritual narratives that frame her life.
