Theresa Bernstein 1890-2002
Framed dims: 36 x 44 in
Bernstein defined art as a natural expression and understood that the vibrancy and strength of her work came from within. This self-consciousness and the spark of originality that marked her best paintings defined Bernstein's artistic philosophy. Although this philosophy was quite modern, she avoided complete abstraction and painted the rosier aspects of American life throughout her career.
This beach scene is perhaps Bernstein's best painting. The allover effect of the paint and the thick brushwork give the composition great vitality. The way Bernstein abbreviates the forms of the figures into staccato dabs of paint captures the essence of the action. Her palette is also typical of her style, in that she chooses unexpected colors to convey the look and feel of the scene in a uniquely expressive way.
