Henry Bayley Snell 1858-1943

Henry Bayley Snell was a renowned American Impressionist artist and was a first generation member of the New Hope School in Pennsylvania. He was best known for his coastal and harbor scenes of areas such as Cornwall, Gloucester and Boothbay Harbor. Born in England, Snell emigrated to the United States at age 17, where he settled in New York and studied at the Arts Student League. He began painting in New Hope in 1900, moving there around 1925 with his wife and fellow artist Florence Frances. It is no wonder that with his great skill he became a beloved teacher, co-founding the Boothbay Studios in 1921 and teaching in New York City, Washington, D.C., and the Philadelphia School of Design for Women.
