Sailing at Twilight
One of the leading marine painters of the Luminist style, Silva was especially known for his skillful manipulation of light and atmospheric effects. In Sailing at Twilight, he beautifully captures the brilliant orange hue of the sunset on the horizon, lighting up the sky and tingeing the clouds with hints of yellow and purple. This is an excellent example of the artist’s work in a fine period frame.
Silva’s most luminist paintings are rare and wonderful finds; they are also considerable investments that are out of reach for many collectors. Sailing at Twilight is an excellent example of Silva’s mature style, with his exceptional depiction of light and atmosphere, but it is more accessible for a serious collector. Indeed, this painting would be fine addition to any distinguished collection of American landscape painting.
