SPECIALIZING IN 19th AND 20th CENTURY AMERICAN ART
Picturing Music, October 16–November 13th, 2015
Avery Galleries is pleased to announce its fall 2015 exhibition, Picturing Music, which traces the relationship between painting and music in American art from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century.
Beginning in the nineteenth century, artists primarily pictured music through representation and narrative, and this exhibition features notable examples by major American artists such as Eastman Johnson, Thomas Wilmer Dewing, Childe Hassam, and Thomas Eakins. With the advent of Modernism in the twentieth century, artists began to experiment with capturing the abstract essence of music through form and color. This exhibition highlights a diverse selection of these important modernists, including Marsden Hartley, Max Weber, Oscar Bluemner, Stanton Macdonald-Wright, Arthur Dove, and Stuart Davis.
Please join us for the opening reception on Friday, October 16th from 6-9pm. There will be a short concert from 6:30 to 7pm featuring the pianist Katherine Harris Rick.
