1839: Born in Fairhaven, Massachusetts. His father was a ship carpenter and the young Gifford was first apprenticed to that trade and then learned shoemaking; 1862: Enlisted in Company 1, third regiment, of M.V.M. which was recruited in Fairhaven and served for nine months in North Carolina; 1863: Gifford was captured by Rebel forces and spent time in the famous Libby Prison in Richmond; 1865: After finally being discharged from service, Gifford returned to Fairhaven and devoted himself to painting; 1866: Married Miss Cordelia Palmer of Medford, Massachusetts; 1879: Spent two months travelling to England, Scotland, and Ireland; 1904: Died in his home at age 66.
